The EFL Championship, also known as the Championship or Sky Bet Championship, is the second highest division in the football pyramid after the premier league. The Championship league has 24 teams.
This guide focuses on one of the top leagues—the EFL Championship. It explains how it works, explores predictions and winner odds on EFL, and provides EFL championship betting tips.
Winner Odds on EFL
When the Championship starts, each of the 24 clubs plays against every other team twice, once at home and once away, for 46 games. They get 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a loss, with the total number of points accumulated determining a club's ranking on the league table.
At the end of the season, the top two clubs in the Championship are automatically promoted and join Premier League odds, while the next four teams (third to sixth) head to a play-off tournament to compete for the third promotion spot. After the tournament:
- The play-off winner joins the top two clubs in being promoted to the Premier League.
- The bottom three clubs in the Premier League are relegated to the Championship.
- The bottom three clubs in the Championship are relegated to League One.
- The top three teams in League One are promoted to the Championship.
Following the 2023/24 season, Sheffield United, Burnley, and Luton Town were demoted to the Championship, while Southampton, Ipswich Town, and Leicester City were promoted to the Premier League.

EFL Championship Odds 24/2025
Although it's still early in the season, an analysis of the EFL betting odds and past performances can give you insight into which teams are likely to face promotion and relegation.
Favourites to Win the 2025 EFL Championship
Most EFL championship odds 24/2025 favour Leeds to win the 2025 EFL Championship. They were firmly in contention for automatic promotion in the 2023/24 season with excellent odds, but their form collapsed in the final weeks when they lost four of their last six matches. In the play-offs, they bet Norwich City 4–0 in the semis before losing 1–0 to Southampton in the finals.
The Leeds manager has finished top three with at least 90 points in all three of his seasons as a Championship coach. This means he has good championship betting odds of leading Leeds to the Premier League this season.
With question marks surrounding some of the other promotion favourites—Burnley going through a transitional phase after losing Kompany to Bayern and Sheffield being relegated after accumulating the third-fewest points in Premier League history—it's hard to look past Leeds when betting.
The other two promotion spots are more challenging to predict, but the championship betting odds make a good case with Burnley and Sheffield United or Sunderland. .
Teams to be Relegated From the Championship
Oxford may struggle to secure their spot in the Championship because of the higher level of competition against teams with more resources and experience, but they’ve had a decent start to the season so far and might just survive.
Plymouth Argyle, who survived relegation by a single point in 2023/24, could also end up dropping down to League One. Despite showing some improvement after securing their manager, their poor away form of last season has continued into the current season. Another team predicted to struggle is Hull City. The former Premier League side has opened this season with losing 10 and drawing 7 in the opening 20 games.
