Monaco Grand Prix Highlights

After a dramatic visit to Spain in which rivalries intensified and history was made, the Formula One championship heads to perhaps its most famous race this weekend as the paddock descends onto the streets of Monaco for Sunday’s Grand Prix.

Following the events in Barcelona, this weekend’s race is set up to be perhaps the most intriguing over the past few seasons after Max Verstappen’s dream debut and Mercedes’ nightmare visit to the popular Spanish track.

Bonkers Barcelona Makes History

If you thought the championship couldn’t get any spicier then a visit to the sunshine in Spain may have changed your mind. The opening lap controversy dominated much of the headlines until a young Dutchman wrote his name into the history books forever.

Verstappen, fresh from his early move to Red Bull after Danill Kvyat’s demotion to Torro Rosso for his antics with Sebastian Vettel in Russia, became the youngest winner of a Formula One race at the age of just 18.

Verstappen now holds the titles for the youngest race winner, points scorer and podium finisher but perhaps more impressive was the maturity he showed handling the pressure he was put under in the closing stages in Spain.

The youngster made the most of his team-mate’s three-stop strategy to haul himself into the lead and after intense pressure from the chasing Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonnen, the new Red Bull man held his nerve to seal a thrilling race victory.

A determined Hamilton was much quicker through turn three after Rosberg’s car was set into the wrong engine mode, and with the Brit behind in the championship he seized his chance.

The 30-year-old dived for the inside on the exit of the corner as the German thrust his Silver Arrow across the track to defend his position, forcing Hamilton onto the grass.

The reigning world champion lost all control and spun, colliding into the back of his team-mate with both barrelling into the gravel trap and out of the Grand Prix.

Following the race conclusion, the stewards analysed the situation and both drivers were summoned to give their verdict on proceedings – but neither were deemed to be at fault with no action taken.

An already tender situation has raised the stakes even further as their rivalry reached new heights following that fateful afternoon.

The German will be the more confident of the pair having claimed each of the last three Grand Prix’s in Monaco, with Hamilton having not secured maximum points at the circuit since 2008 in his McLaren days.

With the tight, twisty, unforgiving circuit you wouldn’t bet against this one ending in tears yet again.

Although the pair may have received a serious slap on the wrist from Silver Arrows bosses, you can bet neither will want to blink first as they vie for glory with 16 races remaining.

Slight alterations were made for the 2003 event, a new gentler entry to the Rascasse corner was implemented while in 2004 a new pit complex and increased spectator capacity were installed.

The challenging circuit spans 3.337km across each of the 78 laps, making up a 260.286km race distance for a gruelling test.

A combination of precision, technical excellence and bravery are required to win in Monaco, with the barrier-lined track leaving no margin for error.

Overtaking is next to impossible so qualifying at Monte Carlo is arguably the most important of any race on the calendar in 2016.

Brakes are worked as hard as they will be all season, with maximum downforce and full concentration required for the cars to slither through the streets to glory at the historical track.

Previous Winners and Track Suitability

Rosberg will be hoping to join Prost this year as the German holds three in the bank alongside Brits Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart.

Seven drivers then head a list with two race wins at the inaugural track which includes the likes of Niki Lauda, Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and David Coulthard.

Although McLaren has struggled in recent seasons they still hold the overall lead of most race victories with a whopping 15 to the team’s name.

Ferrari are next with eight and will be hoping to add to that tally this weekend, Lotus remain with seven but their last win was way back in 1987 and as the team are now managed by Renault, there is no room to add to the tally.
