Ebor festival betting tips and preview day 3
“Rain, rain go away come again another day”. This has been the thoughts of many of the trainers looking for fast summery ground heading into the Ebor festival with the likes of a disappointing Churchill struggling to cope with the going. The rain hasn’t dampened the spirits of race goers though and with a sunnier climate predicted (if you believe the weather man), we could see some seriously fast races on a frantic Friday!
The highlight race of the third day is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes. Speed is key is this race, and favourites are far from guaranteed to win. Last year Henry Candy’s Limato was hot favourite going off at around 15/8 after an impressive win in the July Cup only the month before; things didn’t go as planned however, as Mecca’s Angel stormed to victory. There is also the super competitive Lonsdale Cup to look forward to which is of course a top quality Group 2; the winner of this race will normally head into the Doncaster Cup in September so keep an eye out for any decent ante-post bets there.

The Nunthorpe Stakes – Group 1
The Nunthorpe Stakes is a unique race in more than one way. It is one of the few races that is open to 2 year olds competing with horses of any age giving the youngsters a chance to run with the big boys. It has been 10 years since a 2 year old last won, when Kingsgate Native found an extra gear to claim the victory. This year, no 2 year old has an entry so we won’t be seeing that change this time round. As this race forms part of the Breeders Cup Challenge series, the winner will receive an invitation and entry to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint running in North America.

The Lonsdale Cup and remaining races
The Lonsdale Cup is a Group 2 race, and is one of the longest races at the Ebor festival at 2m1f. There is a decent field competing for share of a large £200,000 purse with first place securing well over £100k. Four other races fill up the meeting with a Maiden Stakes and the City of York Stakes Group 3 amongst the best of the rest.
